An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent band 6 on Ward 20. Ward 20 is a 30 bedded single room medical ward in our new state of the art hospital, specialising in Care of the Elderly, and we are looking for a strong dynamic applicant to join the team. The role requires excellent communication skills and strong leadership qualities. The post holder will be responsible for the day to day running of shifts ensuring high standards of patient care are delivered.  The role will involve managerial duties and supporting the team through changes within the NHS.

Applicants need to be able to demonstrate a keen interest in Elderly and Dementia Care. There is a Dementia Key worker who assists with the Elderly in the activities who supports patients with Dementia and Delerium in the adjoining patient activity area. This will include promotion of independence and nutrition via lunch club and exercise classes. Stimulation will be provided in the form of group or individual sessions including reading, games and other activities.

Therefore an understanding of the needs of individuals living with Dementia will be required as well as compassion to ensure the best outcomes for patients in our care.

You must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate and sustain new and innovative ways of working which facilitate developments in nursing practice as well as being self-motivated and committed to improving service delivery with a flexible approach to the needs of the service. We expect you to be dedicated with a positive attitude and ability to provide patients an excellent service.

You will be responsible for managing and co coordinating patient care on the wards, completing thorough nursing assessments, patient feed back surveys, participating in audits, supervising junior staff and students and acting as a role model; as well as supporting the ward manager with length of stay and delivering and improving the quality of care on the wards. You will be working closely with a large multidisciplinary team, good communication skills are essential to ensure the patient’s journey from admission to discharge is smooth and efficient.

You should have a minimum of 2 years experience at band 5 level and the mentorship and preceptor course.

In return for your care, passion and commitment to this speciality we will actively support staff education and development. We offer excellent development programmes at Band 6 level, and all successful candidates will work closely with our Practice Development Nurse for professional support.

You will be helped in your new role by an excellent multi-disciplinary team. You will be supported through a two week Induction Programme and Preceptorship Programme, which includes supernumerary shifts on the ward.

We welcome applicants with any medical experience and would consider part time applicants. The mentorship course is desirable but not essential.

You will be expected to attend the Trust’s Induction Programme for RNs, RMs and ODPs (which starts on the first day of employment). The programme is full-time (please contact the programme lead if this is problematic: nicola.henthorn@nhs.net), lasts for two weeks and will involve travelling to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area and classroom-based study days which run from 9am to 5pm.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at enhanced level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children)
