Internal applications are invited from a current Band 7 Orthoptist in the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust Orthoptic department to act up to cover the Deputy Head Orthoptist’s maternity leave until 12.6.20. For existing part time Band 7 Orthoptists the Deputy Head Orthoptist post will remain at 30 hours a week, for current full time Band 7 Orthoptists the option of making this a full time position is negotiable.
This post provides the opportunity to assist, and when required deputise for, the Head Orthoptist in leading the department, to be responsible for the Orthoptic aspect of the Kent and Medway school vision screening service, the community Orthoptic service for Kent and Medway and to be line manager to the Band 5/6 Orthoptists which will include conducting appraisals, preceptorship, monitoring performance and acting on areas for improvement.
You will be solely responsible for the delivery and development of the Community Orthoptic service provided for Kent County Council and Medway Public Health. This includes reinstating clinics for children with special educational needs and regular visits to schools for children with special educational needs.
These duties will be in addition to the applicant’s current Band 7 role with a minimum of 3 sessions a week dedicated to the Deputy Head Orthoptist role (1 for the special needs clinic, 1 for responsibility for the Community Orthoptic clinic and 1 for the Deputy Head responsibilities). The successful applicant’s current clinics at these times and the remaining Deputy Head Orthoptists clinics will be covered by a Band 5/6/7 Orthoptist. The exact timetable for this will be finalised with the successful applicant.
You therefore needs to have excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills and be able to work calmly under pressure prioritising their workload to balance managerial and clinical demands.
You must have a recognised management qualification or evidence of demonstrable experience in people management and be registered with the HCPC.
