Would you like to work for an award winning, dynamic, friendly and hardworking team?

The Whatman Acute Frailty Unit was proud to open and pilot the New Frailty Unit within the trust and has been running for 2 years. The unit is proving very successful, with a majority of our patients are discharged on the same day or within 48 hours. As the unit is gaining strength we are now looking to recruit a number of highly motivated and dynamic Staff Nurses into our team.

The Whatman Frailty Unit is a 14 short stay (48 - 72 hours) bedded ward taking both male and female patients with a specialty of elderly frailty with both acute medical and complex needs. The Unit also has an 11 bedded assessment area where patients are welcomed to the unit and then assessed to identify the most appropriate care. We work collaboratively with a range of specialties to facilitate clinical excellence and holistic care delivery with a multi-disciplinary approach. Whatman Frailty Unit has excellent medical cover and our own Frailty Consultant who supports the nurses alongside our dedicated therapy team and Discharge Co-coordinator to ensure safe and efficient medical and discharge planning. Our aim is to utilise Community support to reduce patient’s length of stay which will in turn reduce Hospital Acquired Infections and will have an impact on the reductions of re-admissions.

This post requires motivation, enthusiasm, excellent communication skills and someone who is passionate about Frailty care. We require you to be motivated and enthusiastic about your own professional development and be open to undertaking further academic qualifications. The Whatman Frailty Unit has student nurses attend the ward so an exciting opportunity to undertake the mentorship course would be available after a period of probation. You must be flexible, approachable, motivated, and hardworking and be able to use your own initiative, whilst also having the ability to work under pressure.

You will receive a comprehensive preceptorship programme and will be encouraged in further development. We offer a supportive, exciting and challenging work environment and we are committed to the training and development of our staff. We are keen to develop suitable candidates in their role.

You will be expected to attend the Trust’s Induction Programme for RNs, RMs and ODPs (which starts on the first day of employment).  The programme is full-time (please contact the programme lead if this is problematic:, lasts for two weeks and will involve travelling to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area and classroom-based study days which run from 9am to 5pm.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at enhanced level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children)

As an inclusive employer, we are committed to having a diverse workforce and being a Stonewall Diversity Champion and Disability Confident Committed Employer we are working to create a workplace that enables all staff to reach their full potential.  We, therefore, encourage applications from BME people, LGBT+ people and people with disabilities.
